Getting the Glare

Snowy Owls now being the main focus as we near mid-March. Many of the back roads had been choked with snow and impassable and some have been plowed to some degree.
There are signs that say “Impassable When Wet”…who would have thought these dirt roads would be so greasy at this time of year as I found out.
Luckily I was able to keep the truck between the ditches and didn’t have to walk to Mr. Farmer asking for help.
It’s a good thing I’m familiar with the area and know the back roads well after spending years searching for the Great White Snowy Owls from the North.
After a little driving excitement on the greasy road the search continued on better traveled gravel.
At the end of the day one can look back and say…”Worse the Conditions the Better the Stories”.

Cheers !

Stare Down with a Snowy

Eyes just dropped in since it’s been awhile since I’ve seen Dennis and thought something may have happened to him ?
Then realized that it was probably do to the recent high winds and snow that had closed many of the back roads where I like to hang out.
It was nice to recognize that black truck over the week-end…given the fact I was perched along a closed section of road I decided to move to perch he had access too.
We had a long stare down only because I felt sorry for him…then I got bored and left.
Hopefully he’ll return before I head back to the Tundra.

As previously mentioned…this winter there has been an abundance of Snowy Owls. I can’t imagine the condition of some of the backroads that I would normally travel with all the Snow that we’ve had.
Still there are many well-traveled roads that will be plowed like the location where this one was found.

May recall the Snowy on a snag and using the grain bin as a blind…well this was a continuation of what unfolded when he decided to finally take flight.
Note the talons…this is the business end of things that all Birds of Prey use to catch prey…much like large barbless fish hooks.

Snowy Owls main diet consist of mice/voles here in Manitoba and lemmings in the Tundra where the spend the summer and nest…like all owls they have extremely good hearing and vision.

Cheers !
