Almost Missed It

There are days when out-n-about that provide little to no rewards…maybe this was going to end up being one of those days or not.

Homeward bound after cruising some back roads and was just passing the last farmyard before the highway…something seemed odd about the light post at the driveway as I passed.

Perhaps it would be worth turning around and checking…nice surprise to find a Red-tailed Hawk (juvenile) perched on Mr. Farmers light post.

Almost missed it…thanks Mother Nature for the reward.

Someone was focused on a possible meal…or just enjoying the view from her perch ?

With a winter storm that passed through Manitoba Christmas Day and into Boxing Day that closed Hwy’s across the province…I’m thinking it will be a few day’s before one could even attempt to navigate any of the back roads in search of owls.

Meet ” Headache ” a Red-tailed Hawk ( Falconry Bird )…I understand that folks may disagree with falconry and I do respect that.
Falconry was made legal in Manitoba in 1998, in order to have a bird a licence needs to be obtained form Manitoba Conservation who have strict guidelines in place.

I took advantage of the opportunity and spent some time with Headache and her handler Neil on their afternoon hunt. This will now be the 8th. bird I’ve worked with over the years.
