Look Mom I Can Fly

It always amazes me how quickly juveniles master flight. After a few days of Wing Flapping at a nest…they take that “First Flight”. The flights are not perfect and they can look very awkward as they figure out what the wings are intended for.

The first flights are usually short soon becoming longer in duration. Still returning to the nest where the adults provide a meal as they still have to learn how to hunt for themselves.
As the wings become stronger they will begin doing mock hunting manoeuvres in open areas…then finally graduate to the real thing on open water and live fish.

An early morning visit finds this young Osprey flying like a Pro…and give him/her a 10 out of 10 on the score card.

Mr. Osprey has been kept busy with three hungry mouths to feed. Sometimes bringing in a whole fish and other times a partially eating one. Perhaps he’s worked up an appetite or just doing a taste test for the youngsters.

Never the less the kids do love their Fresh Sushi…just sayin !

Finally making time to check the Urban Osprey nest here in Winnipeg…the two chicks are now at the stage where they are Winger-sizing.
The other morning there had been a great deal of flap, flap, flapping taking place.
They now work at strengthening their wings so that when they fledge that First Flight will be a success.
