Week-end Check on the Osprey

Over the week-end finally able to re-check the Osprey site. For those that are unfamiliar with how to determine if it’s a juvenile or adult here is two easy things to look for…eye color and feather coloration.
Juveniles have white fringed feathers with orange eyes…while the adults have dark brown feathering and yellow eyes. There is also a difference in voice pitch when they are calling.

Unlike other raptors they tend to be human tolerant and will provide great viewing.

Surprise, Surprise…there is a Bird God.

I would like to retract my last post when I had said “Of the three locations I check I haven’t seen any young”

After one of my contacts emailed and said she had seen a juvenile…it was a must check location.

I like it when I’m wrong in a good way…sure enough I got my first glimpse of a juvenile having a morning snack.

Having only seen one chick it makes me wonder now if there could be a second…time will tell.

Strange Year For The Osprey

It’s been a strange year for the Osprey up at our summer place this year. Of the three locations I check I haven’t seen any young ?

It’s unclear as to why but my thoughts are it’s weather related. Perhaps all do to a late spring and then a long cold snap…this may have had something to do with the mating process and the viability of the eggs that may have been laid.

This all means that there was no chance of watching the young do their pre-flight flapping at the nest sites.

Hopefully next year will bring better results.
