Looks are Deceiving

Always wonderful to encounter a Great Horned Owl. Never the less one has to keep in mind that these owls have been known to become very aggressive towards humans in order to defend their offspring.
Great Horned Owls can be found in residential areas, city parks, stands of trees, small woodlots where they are able to hunt.
They are fierce predators with great talon strength (not something you want to mess with) that can take large prey like rabbits…even raptors like Peregrines aren’t always safe.
No need for these owls to migrate as they are covered in extremely soft feathers that provides them with insulation for our cold winter weather…as well these soft feathers help them fly very quietly in pursuit of prey.
It’s amazing how they have adapted…with the ability to fly through thick bush/trees without a sound being made.
And no I’ve never had the pleasure of being attacked by a Great Horned Owl…would like to keep it that way.

Time Slipped Away

Time seems to be on fast forward…I’m not a fortune teller but do believe that with our single digit temps overnight means Fall is here.
This time of year means I’m working on the job jar trying to get caught up and stay ahead things. Then pulled out the note that said…send out a photo.
Well this Great Horned Owlet reminds me of how I feel…time just slipped away.

Horns or Ears

Great Horned Owls are easily identified by the tufts of fine feathers that resemble horns or ears…hence the name “Horned Owl”
These tufts that folks refer to as horns/ears are used in territorial display and defending against predators…tufts become more visible when there are intruders.
The owlets tufts have yet to form and will do so as it matures…they may not yet have the horns but they do have loud voices.
Such was the case on this visit with two of the owlets belting out loud screams…there’s an old saying “Squeaky Wheel Gets the Grease”.

In the Nature World perhaps the Screaming Owlet Gets the Food…just sayin !
