Pelicans on the Red River
When it comes to Pelicans I have no idea how to determine if it’s a male or female…they all look the same.
Years ago I thought that perhaps one sex or the other had the yellow/orange flap on the top of its beak…over the years have come to learn that both the female and male have this bump that simply makes them more attractive to a prospective mate and will fall off after breeding season.
When the high water levels in the river drop they will again move in towards the locks at Lockport and collect in great numbers.
It’s a great place to see them up-close and personal.
The trip wouldn’t be complete without a stop at Skinners or The Half-Moon for some good eats…just sayin !
Pelicans on the River
Though there are still Pelicans around my focus has been on other feathered friends when out-n-about.
Reflecting back on a warm summer day from earlier this year…with Half Moon Hotdogs and Pelicans on the menu at Lockport.
