Pelican on the Red

I’m sure everyone has seen the American White Pelican at some point…perhaps in one of the many manmade ponds within the city.
If traveling outside the city near Lockport, Selkirk or Gimli you may have noticed them soring high overhead in a group.
Their main food source is fish and hunt for them singly or in a group as they are a very social bird…often congregating forming a circle around a school of fish when located and begin feeding.
Pelicans being the largest bird you will find in Manitoba with a wingspan of up to 90 in.
Would be pretty hard to mistake them for another bird.

Change of Pace

Change of pace is warranted…even though I have a number of captures from Great Horned and Cooper’s site visits that may not see the light of day.
Always exciting to have a close up encounter with Bald Eagles.
Although I don’t want to rush things.
Thoughts of fall trips up Lake Winnipeg when the Eagles begin to collect in good numbers prior to the Fall Migration keep popping into my mind.

October will come all too soon.

Just Hanging Out

Two of the three Great Horned Owlets just hanging out together. At this stage the owlets at times tend to stick close together…even though they are now able to fly they are still unable to hunt for themselves.
Relying on the adults for food…finding rabbit remains is not uncommon.

There is always an adult nearby that will defend the owlets from Crows that tend to mob the owls…both adults and owlets.
Mobbing can often go on for prolonged periods of time…something that is sad to witness.
So it goes in the Nature World.
