{"id":3132,"date":"2023-10-31T08:50:53","date_gmt":"2023-10-31T13:50:53","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/photosbydennis.ca\/blog\/?p=3132"},"modified":"2023-10-31T08:50:53","modified_gmt":"2023-10-31T13:50:53","slug":"its-that-time-of-year","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/photosbydennis.ca\/blog\/2023\/10\/31\/its-that-time-of-year\/","title":{"rendered":"It\u2019s That Time of Year"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" onmousedown=\"alert('Sorry ... you will need to contact me if you wish to use this photo')\" src=\"http:\/\/www.pbase.com\/photosbydennis\/image\/174099938\/large.jpg\" alt=\"photo courtesy of Dennis Swayze\" \/><\/p>\n<p>With the recent snow that has blanketed Manitoba thoughts of the Great White Owls from the North has been on my mind\u2026hopefully getting out soon.<br \/>\nThey begin to show up anything from mid-October onwards\u2026hanging around till mid to late March.<\/p>\n<p>During the summer they nest in the Arctic Tundra\u2026with the female laying anywhere from 3-10 eggs.<br \/>\nThe number of eggs laid depends on the Lemming population\u2026which is their main food source.<\/p>\n<p>The higher the Lemming population the more eggs laid and hatched\u2026meaning more owls showing up in Southern Manitoba.<\/p>\n<p>Observations from years gone by\u2026I believe the young owls are unfamiliar with poles, posts and trees and when first arriving some are seen along a roadway or in a field\u2026perhaps reminding them of the Tundra.<\/p>\n<p>It doesn\u2019t take them long to figure out that poles make for a good vantage point to hunt from.<\/p>\n<p>Anyway\u2026that\u2019s my theory and I\u2019m sticking to it.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>With the recent snow that has blanketed Manitoba thoughts of the Great White Owls from the North has been on my mind\u2026hopefully getting out soon.
